P1. Composing for film

How to compose music for film:

1. Watch the film multiple times to get a sense of what's going on in the film and what rhythm would suit it. Also you could watch it without sound and try to imagine what's sounds would suit the action.

2. Chose the instruments and atmosphere. Determining what atmosphere you would like helps you think of the instruments you could use.
3. Make the rhythm and speed adapt to the speed of action.
4. The music for the film is about emotion. Try to reflect the emotions the producer was trying to portray.
5. Don't ask for feedback. Asking for feedback might stop your thinking process and/or direct you in a different direction.

Hans Zimmer and Christopher Nolan worked together to make the ambient noise for The Joker. They did a lot of different experiments using different tools. Hans was sent stills of what the Joker looks like and what he was doing by Christopher to give him a feel of the Joker. Hans tried to create tension using razor blades and string. He then thought of using two contrasting notes. He used a cello and guitar. Hans didn't want to make a happy typical blockbuster. He wanted to make something that people wouldn't like and he wanted to make something that was over the edge. Hans Zimmer wanted the music to have a punk influence, the feel of the Joker and to be completely different to the other music in the film. I think that the final score works very well. It makes a lot of tension and darkness for the character which was what Hans and Christopher wanted to portray.

P1. New Location

We decided that we would use the woods at the back of the college for our re-shoot as it is a lot bigger and has more places to film.

P1. Fireball, eye and exploding effect's

                                                                          Eye effect
For the eye effect I used the lens flare. I used keyframes and went frame by frame moving the flare by changing the flare centre to put it where it needed to be.
                                                Exploding effect
First I made a glow effect on the face. I used the pen tool so it was only where I wanted it to be. I then changed the glow effect's radius and intensity. Once I was happy with it I decided to make the person explode. To do this I used the cc scaterize. I then went frame by frame using key frames and changing the opacity so the exploding is more obvious when the person is of screen.

P1. Production meeting - 31st Jan

Present: Me,Charlotte and Amber

Topic - Script and shots
We need to decide if we are keeping the script and story we are doing now or change it.

Ideas:
- Jay gets picked on by Blake for not knowing his powers. Blake - Fire power, throws fire at Jay (dodging the fire)
- Alisha hits Blake with lightning to stop him
- Heavy footsteps, everyone looks around
- Alisha thinks its Blake messing around
- Foot steps get louder
- Alisha screams
- Jay and Blake panic
- They run, Blake freaks out and fireballs Jay
- Jay runs away from Blake, Blake gets dragged up
- Jay runs behind a tree, tries to figure out his power
- Keep the ending

P1. Rough Cut - Peer Feedback + Appraisal

Appraisal

Audio

Strengths - I think that my intro music is really good and clear. The lightning sound FX is clear and goes with the effect. Some of the audio is clear and understandable.

Weaknesses - Some of the audio isn't very clear and you can't here what they are saying.

Improve - To improve it I would redo the audio so it will be clear and some isn't as loud as others. I would however get them to talk in the woods so you have some outside noise e.g wind.

Special effects

Strengths - I think that my lightning effect is good and is in time with the footage and sound.

Weaknesses - I haven't done the drag up or fall back effect. I can do the drag up effect but I haven't figured out the fall back one yet.

Improve - I need to learn the fall back effect. Also in the feedback was suggested to have the lightning effect strike at different times. I thought about doing this and I am going to test it out and see which looks better.

Sequence

The costumes went well we the characters. The guys were casual and the girl was slightly dressed up. The acting was good and the actors were perfect for the characters. I think that what I have so far flows pretty well. The narrative slightly works but because we are missing shots and audio it isn't that good. My rough cut is entertaining but also a bit confusing because of the missing shots, effects and audio. The effects that iv'e used in editing go with the setting and atmosphere we tried to create.

Improve - To improve the sequence we need to film more shots and redo the audio. To do this we need to organise what we are missing and when everyone is available to do it.
